PROJECT #5

1. Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail.
When looking at this work of art, the first thing that comes to mind when simply looking at it, is nothing. The reason I say nothing is because the moment my eyes glanced through the piece, it took me everywhere in the matter of seconds. This painting had the ability to shift my focus to everything and really take in its value all throughout. With its background being mostly dark, with grey shadows and blackness, the pieces that do stand out are all due to its unique textures and shapes.
2. What is the relationship of this work to the time and society in which it was created? Describe the symbols used to express this relationship.
The relationship of this work and the time and society in which it was created was very intense. It is interesting to see the way this painting speaks for itself and the meaning it portrays. When looking at this painting, there is not one sense of happiness or calmness. During this time, war was a very scary subject. It was a moment in time where many people feared for their lives and this painting showed exactly how real and ugly things could get. It was able to portray fear, sadness, anger and even anxiety. For example, the way everything in this painting seems like it shouldn't belong there or together, brings out a concern and uneasiness
3. Identify elements in the work that evoke a persuasive or emotional response. Be specific about what those responses are and why.
One element that perfectly displays an emotional response is the image in the far left of the painting. We see a women who seems to be carry a body over her knees, as it lays lifeless, as she is screaming in to the air.  This image portrays the reality of war and the harm it causes. The fact that there are people who are willingly prepared to risk their life for war, yet there are those who do not ask for it, and still pay for the consequences. It shows that when anger and violence come together, only negative things come out of it.
4. Evaluate what you perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of the work.  Apply discipline specific vocabulary and concepts when describing your point of view.
When evaluating this piece, one weakness of the work I found was the amount of elements used. Meaning, there were so many little drawings within this painting, that it was very confusing and difficult to focus on. It was tricky to simply focus on one thing and try to find to find a connection to it. However, I would also say that its weakness is also a strength. The reason I would say that is because the overall painting was so strong on its own. This is a type of painting that needs to be studied and analyzed to completely understand its story, which is the beauty of it all.
