MOD 11 VIDEO REVIEW
1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose these videos because I wanted to learn about the relationship between Matisse and Picasso. The way their art spoke for themselves, and how they compared and contrast. It was interesting to see the way their relationship was and the way it worked. There were sigs of respect, however it was not always friendly.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
For the Matisse and Picasso video, a key concept I took was that painting and drawing are the same thing. Drawing is painting, simply with less material because its still possible to create different contrast through volumes and change the quality of the paper.
For the Cubism video, something interesting I took from it was the fact that Duchamp claimed, The Sad Young Man was a self portrait. However, the painting was a figure that was taken apart and reassembled. This shows how he registers the arbitrary appearance of the figure, but also its imminent change of appearance in movement.
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
These videos relate to the readings because, they provide examples on topics we've covered. For example, throughout the chapters we've read, we have read about collages and how they work. Yet, as we watched the video, I also happened to learn that, Picasso in fact created the first collage in 1912. Its information like this that makes the videos so much helpful.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The videos help us understand exactly what is it the text is referring to. In this case, the text explained how changes in modernity happened everywhere in Europe, and how they provoked visual arts, which played out dramatically in France and Paris. This was interesting because in both video, it mentioned how artist like, Matisse was inspired by Europe and created his most amazing art works there.
