MASK MAKING

The reason I decided to choose this mask as my inspiration was because I wanted to incorporate nature into this project. With the sugar skull mask, I wanted to include my heritage. Being Mexican, I was raised to appreciate the art and the culture and the first thing that came to mind were the sugar skills used when celebrating the day of the dead. The sugar skull mask inspired me to use color because with these types of mask it is all about expressing creativity and using any color. Also, its an inspiration to use different shapes, as you can see in the example, there are multiple shapes along the eyes, the forehead, and mouth.

As for the other two masks, I looked at those as inspiration for texture. Having had the flowers in the first example, I wanted to go along with the theme of nature and incorporate texture through branches. It would be a cool idea to have branches sticking out of the mask to tie in with the aesthetic of my mask.

I enjoyed every part of this project. Going out of our way to come up with a piece of art work with no boundaries is what I enjoy the most. Incorporating nature and colorfulness was the main aspect of my mask. I wanted it to represent the way I see nature, the flowers, the bright green leaves, and all the colors that come with it. For my mask, I used the elements of color and texture. It was important as to what colors I used, and I believe I chose the RIGHT colors. Colors that tied in perfectly together, and ones that stood out the most, with such brightness. As for texture, I included it with the help of the leaves. Although they weren't real leaves, the lines on the leaves added texture, as if when touched it would feel like real leaves. A principle used for my mask was Balance. I used a combination of the leaves, the flowers, and paint to balance out each side of the mask, to create stability and make it symmetrical. Overall, this project was by far my favorite. I was really able to customize it to my liking and incorporate some of my favorite things and colors.
