M10 VIDEO REVIEW
1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
The reason I selected both the Hinduism video and the Buddhism video was because I realized that both were traditions I never really learned about. I had been aware of both, yet I was not informed much about their beliefs, customs and values. Watching both videos, I gained knowledge on their lifestyle and how both groups see life, which was all really interesting.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
For the Buddhism video, the interesting concept I picked up was that the key to Buddha's teaching is Tahnha, the desire for pleasure, position, and possession. It is everything that would feed the ego to represent enlightenment. Since his mission was to share his enlightenment, by proclaiming the basic message of love.
For the Hinduism video, what I gathered from it was that the great river Ganges is a powerful symbol of Hinduism. It is a symbol of their gods love for the earth and its people, and it also symbolizes death and reincarnation, because they believe in life and death.
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Both the videos help when it comes to the readings because it allows us to watch examples of what the reading is talking about. Watching these videos allows us to fully grasp and understand the concept, and how art applied to both groups through many different ways. For example architect was an evolution for both religions and it was nice to see how they compared and contrasted.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The videos add depth to understand the readings and art concepts because they provide perfect examples on the subject. For instance, in Hinduism I found the way they used pyres to place dead bodies, as a form of art. The way people wanted to die in Varanasi because they believe they will attain liberation from the cycle of birth, death and reincarnation and go to heaven. It was fascinating to see how art was incorporated in moments like those.
